Parents and Child Development

Parents play a very important role in a child’s life. The environment at home is responsible for the way a child behaves to a great extent. The bond you shares with your children depend on the way you treat them. A strong bond of love and care between parents and children can be built by spending quality time, appreciating them, showing affection, giving them a sense of security, and guiding them whenever they are wrong with conviction. So parents must try as much to follow these and become good parents first before expecting children to become good and well-behaved children. Different attitudes of parents have varying impact on children mental make-up and behavior.

  • Authoritarian Parents: authoritarian parents as the name suggests are strict and very dominating. They impose their decisions on their children and don’t allow them to make their own decisions. Such behavior of parents has a negative impact on child as they fear to take their decisions later and lose confidence gradually. Further, this type of parenting retards the intellectual development of children. At times, some children rebel against such parents and become aggressive.

  • Permissive Parents: The permissive parents don’t give the child much instruction on how to behave and interact with others. Children brought up by following such parenting lose their self-control and behave childishly to get attention. They do various things to get noticed as they feel ignored at home. Permissive parenting can lead to low self-esteem in children.

  • Democratic Parents: Parents who follow this parenting style allow children to be responsible for their actions. This is the best parenting technique as it allows children to grow in a balanced environment. Parents set high standards and guide their children to act according to his/her age. Parents enforce rules but also emphasize on independence and individuality. In this type of parenting, parents listen to their children’s needs and explain their expectations. They take time out for them and children feel loved and wanted. Such growing environment helps children to become confident individuals.
If you are a parent, you must evaluate your parenting style and determine if it’s best for your child’s development. If not, you must change your attitude towards your child and take the responsibility to make them better individuals.
